Directions:There’s something about biting into a tasty, chocolate covered strawberry. The chocolate breaks and cracks when you bite in, and then there is the sensation of the ripe, sweet, strawberry. Chocolate covered strawberries are a treat to most people, and eaten at special occasions; yet, you can easily make your own chocolate covered strawberries that are just as delicious as boxed strawberries and try different types of chocolate! All you need to make chocolate covered strawberries is chocolate, strawberries and some vegetable shortening. Start by putting three of four cups of water in a medium sized pot and put it on the stove on medium. Then, take another, smaller pot and put a cup of chocolate chips along with ½ tablespoon of shortening. Put the pot of chocolate chips over the pot of water and stir, and in a few minutes, you should have smooth, creamy chocolate to dip your strawberries in. Move the chocolate into a bowl that is deep but not too wide so the strawberries will dip smoothly. Make sure the strawberries have been rinsed, but they must also be dry so the chocolate will stick, and the strawberries don’t become soggy. Once you start dipping the strawberries, set them on parchment paper (they will stick on a plate and the chocolate will come off the strawberries, so make sure you do this). Also, remember not to dip the strawberries too slowly, because the chocolate starts to harden very quickly. After you’ve dipped the strawberries, simply stick them in the fridge and let them cool, then they will be ready to eat. Remember, when you make chocolate covered strawberries, they need to be eating within a couple of days, or the berries get moist and soggy. Perhaps you are wondering if different types of chocolate make a difference on the flavor, texture, or quality of you chocolate covered strawberries. I decided to test this question with three different types of chocolate- white, milk, and dark. I made the chocolate covered strawberries with white, milk, and dark Nestle Toll House chocolate chips. I made twelve strawberries of each flavor and let them cool in the fridge, then set them out for my family to try. The milk chocolate had the best flavor according to my mom and me. The dark chocolate had a nice texture, and stuck to the strawberries very well. The white chocolate coated the strawberries very lightly, which some people like, but the flavor wasn’t very strong, so if you decide to use white chocolate, it would be best to try a different brand, or just drizzle it on the milk chocolate and dark chocolate strawberries! Overall, it comes down to your personal preference of what kind of chocolate you would like to use, but it’s fun to do a variety. So, the next time you want a fancy looking treat to serve to guests, or just a tasty dessert for yourself, simply pick up some strawberries and a chocolate of your choice for these delectable little chocolate covered strawberries. |
