Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c. butter, softened
1 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour, sifted
1 tsp. salt
red food coloring
2 T. crushed candy canes
2 T. granulated sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375º.
Stir together crushed candy canes and granulated sugar; set aside.
Mix butter, powdered sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla thoroughly. Mix flour and salt and then stir into the wet mixture.
Divide dough in half and blend red food coloring into one half.
Roll a 4-inch strip from each color. For smooth, even strips, roll them back and forth on a lightly floured board. Place strips side by side, press lightly together and twist like a rope. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down to form the handle of the candy cane.
Bake 9 minutes until lightly browned.
Immediately sprinkle candy cane/sugar mixture over cookies (while still warm.) Move cookies to wire cooling rack. Cool completely and enjoy!

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
I started making these in the early years of our marriage from the Betty Crocker cookbook. Susie then picked them up and, in recent years, it's been Gail and Michelle who have taken the lead on these cookies. Betty Crocker has changed the recipe in newer editions of the cookbook, but this recipe is the old standby. ~Dixie
