1 1/2 c shortening
1 c brown sugar
1 1/4 c white sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
dash of salt
2 1/4 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp hot water
3 c oats
1 c chopped nuts
3 c chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugars and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla and salt. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add to creamed mixture with dry ingredients. Add oats, chocolate chips and nuts. Drop on greased baking sheet. Bake @ 350º, 12 to 15 minutes.

Why are these are called tollhouse cookies?

Years ago there were tollbooths at some river crossings on the Mississippi River. Folks waiting to cross could buy coffee and cookies at the toll mans' booth.
