1 cup brown sugar
2 cups water
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp baking powder
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup nuts - chopped
3/4 cup milk

Directions:
Directions:
Combine brown sugar, water and butter in saucepan and bring to a boil. 

In separate bowl combine remaining dry  ingredients;  add milk and stir.  Batter will be thick.
 
Pour boiling brown sugar mixture into a 8x8" or  9x9" baking dish; drop batter by spoonsful into hot mixture. 

Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned on top. 

May be served warm or cold, but best served warm topped with whipped cream or Cool Whip.

This comes out of the oven as a layer of spicy cake with raisins and nuts over a wonderful sauce. Just scoop out some cake, top with the luscious sauce followed by a dab of whipped cream. This was a favorite of my mom's (and mine!) because it is quick to fix and no need to buy special ingredients. If company dropped by unexpectedly (and that happened frequently in those days) this could be whipped up and baking while fixing the main part of the meal. Plus.....it is so-o-o-o good!
