Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 3/4 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp almond extract
1/4 c.milk
1/2 c. SLICED almonds, coarsely chopped
Powdered sugar (for Almond icing)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Using mixer, cream the butter till softened. Add sugar and beat till fluffy. Add egg and almond extract and beat well. Add flour mixture and mix well.
2. Divide dough into fourths. Form each into a thin 12 inch log. Place 4 to 5 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet or on parchment paper. Use a floured smooth juice glass or jar to flatten each log so that they are about 2-3 inches wide, trimming any uneven edges with a sharp knife.
3. Brush flattened dough with milk and sprinkle with almonds. Bake in 325 degrees oven for 12-14 minutes, until edges are very lightly browned. Do NOT overbake or cookies will be too crisp and hard. While cookies are still warm, cut them at an angle (1 inch wide) with a sharp knife.
4 Cool on a cooling rack and drizzle with Almond icing. Let icing dry completely before storing in an airtight container.

ALMOND ICING: Stir together 1 c. sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 tsp almond extract, and 3-4 tsp milk to make icing of drizzling consistency.

I found this recipe in a 'Cookies for Christmas' cookbook several years ago. Now it has become an annual Christmas tradition of mine.....beautiful on a cookie platter, or putting in a cookie tin as a gift.
