1 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs, separated
2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoons baking powder
1 package semi-sweet chocolate chips
Additional 1 cup brown sugar for topping

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in vanilla and egg yolks. Beat in dry ingredients. Pat dough into a jelly roll pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Beat two egg whites and 1 cup brown sugar until frothy. Bake 350º 25-30 minutes. Cool. Cut into squares. Best stored in tin containers.

These were a Dodds family tradition. My grandmother always had a tin of them for the Holidays. This recipe was submitted by a family in California for the Parade Magazine Cookie contest and won first prize.
