Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. dry yeast
1 cup boiling water
2 tbsp. butter
2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. sugar
1 cup cold water
6-1/2 cups flour
1 egg, beaten
2 tbsp. milk

Directions:
Directions:
Combine the warm water, 1 tbsp. sugar, and yeast in a small bowl and set aside.

Combine boiling water, butter, salt and 2 tbsp. sugar in large mixing bowl. Stir until butter melts. Add cooler water and lower the temperature to lukewarm. Stir yeast mixture into water mixture.

Add flour a cup at a time and stir until dough pulls away from the bowl. Turn out on floured surface and knead for 5 to 10 minutes, or until smooth.

Wash bowl and wipe inside with oil. Let dough rise in oiled bowl until it doubles.

Divide in half and shape into 2 long or round loaves. Place on baking stone or baking sheet which has been sprinkled with corn meal. Slit tops diagonally 5 or 6 times. Brush with mixture of beaten egg and milk.

Place loaves in cold oven set to rise to 400º F. Bake about 35 minutes or until golden brown. Place a pan of hot water under the baking stone or sheet to give the loaves a nicer crust.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This recipe is from Southern Living magazine and, while it makes a delicious bread to serve with any meal, it is not a traditional French bread. This has a softer texture and crust and some may prefer it to French baguettes which consist solely of flour, water, salt and yeast.
