2 c water
1 1/4 c maple syrup
1 1/4 c flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 c chilled shortening
1/4 c milk

Directions:
Directions:
In a large saucepan combine water and maple syrup. Cover and simmer while preparing dumplings. Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut in finely chilled shortening. Make a well in dry mixture, add milk and mix lightly. Drop by large spoonfuls into boiling syrup. If desired sprinkle dough with chopped nuts. Cover and boil gently 15 min without lifting lid.
