1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1-3/4 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup chopped nuts

Fudge Frosting:
2 or 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
3 T shortening
5 T milk
2 cups sifted powder sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar & egg. Stir in buttermilk & vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together & stir in. Add nuts. Chill 1 hour. Heat oven to 400º. Drop by teaspoonfuls 2" apart onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake 8 - 10 minutes. Cool.

Frosting:
Melt chocolate & shortening in milk. Remove from heat. Blend in powdered sugar, salt & vanilla. Stir until thick enough to spread on cookies.

I haven't made these in a long time but they were a childhood favorite of mine. I got the recipe from Mom - not sure where she got it from!
