2 tbsp. butter
1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced
2 tbsp. ketchup
3 tbsp. prepared mustard
1 (11 oz) can cheddar cheese soup
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 small French loaf
butter
8 large thick slices tomato
salt and pepper
4 slices cheddar cheese (use thin packaged slices)

Directions:

Melt butter in heavy skillet. Add beef and onion and cook gently until beef is lightly browned. Stir in ketchup, mustard, soup, salt and pepper. Turn heat to low and simmer until mixture is thick. Split French loaf in half lengthwise and lay the halves cut side up on a cookie sheet. Spread with butter then with meat mixture. Lay tomato slices on top of meat and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Put under hot broiler and broil 1 min. Cut each slice of cheese into 4 strips. Lay two of these strips on each slice of tomato. Put under broiler again and broil until cheese bubbles. Cut into pieces and serve very hot.
