1 package yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
½ cup lukewarm water
1¼ cup milk
3 tablespoons butter
½ cup sugar
4½ cups flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Directions:
Add sugar to the warm water; stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast overtop. Let stand 10 minutes. Scald milk with the butter and let cool until lukewarm. Add yeast mixture thoroughly and then the flour, sugar, salt and beaten egg. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Work dough until smooth and bubbly (using mixer or by hand). Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk. Turn onto floured board and roll to ½ inch thickness. Cut with floured doughnut cutter or small juice glass. Lay out to rest. May also reroll scraps. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise again.

Heat oil to 375°. Brown on each side turning with fork. Place on absorbent paper. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

To fill with plum jam - roll out dough and dot with small spoonfuls of jam. Fold over dough. Cut into circles using a glass.
