11/2 to 13/4-lbs.Smoked ham hocks 8 Cups water 1 clove garlic,minced. 8 whole peppercorns 5 whole cloves 1 teaspoons salt. 3 large carrots,scraped and sliced 2 large potatoes,peeled and cubed 1/2 medium head cabbage,coarsely chopped 1/2 cups chopped onion 8(3/4-inch-thick)slices rye bread,toasted. grated parmesan cheese 8(1-ouces)slices swiss cheese,cut into 1/4-inch strips

Combine first 6 ingredients in a large dutch oven.Bring to a boil.Reduce heat;cover and simmer 1 hour or until ham is tender.Remove ham hocks;cut ham from bones,and corsely chop.Return ham to liquid;add carrots.Bring to a boil.Reduce heat;cover and simmer 10 minutes.Add potatoes,cabbage,and onion.Bring to a boil.Reduce heat;cover and simmer an additional 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.Ladle soup into 8 serving dishes;top with a bread slices.Sprinkle with parmesan cheese,and top with swiss cheese.Broil 2 to 3 minutes or until cheese melts;serve immediately
