Cookie dough;

1 c shortening
2 c sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c buttermilk
1/2 tsp salt
5 c flour
1 tsp anise or vanilla extract
1 tsp baking soda

Frosting:

3/4 c sugar
1 egg
3 t cold water
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp anise or vanilla extract

Cookie dough:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Add flavoring. Add flour,salt and baking soda alternately with the buttermilk to the creamed mixture. Roll out dough and cut into shapes. Place on cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes. Sanding sugar can be sprinkled on the cookies before baking instead of frosting the cookies.

Frosting:

Boil all the ingredients in a double boiler. Beat with a hand mixer until stiff. Frost cookies and let dry.
