1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup Crisco Shortening
3/4 cup sugar
6 eggs
3/4 tsp. salt
1 lb. can of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup
1/4 cup cold black coffee
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
5 cups of flour plus more if needed
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tbsp. baking powder

Frosting:
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk plus more if needed to make a thin frosting

Directions:

In a large bowl, cream the butter and shortening. Add the sugar, eggs and salt. Beat until fluffy. Stir in the chocolate syrup, cold coffee and nuts (optional). Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Let the dough stand for 1 hour. If it is too sticky, add a little flour. Roll into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on parchment-lined cookie sheets. Bake in a preheated 400º oven for 10 minutes. Frosting: Mix the powdered sugar and milk until it is a thin frosting. When cookies cool, dip them into the frosting and let them air dry. Store in a covered tin or plastic container to keep them soft.

Our neighbor Marie LaPorte was a great Italian baker. When my mother tasted these incredible chocolate cookies, she asked for the recipe. It is one of our family's favorite recipes and we have been making them every Christmas for the past 45 years!
