Directions:
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 c lukewarm water. Mix together remaining 2 c water, sugar, salt, melted shortening. Add dissolved yeast and beaten egg. Add half of the flour and beat thoroughly. Add remaining flour gradually beating after each addition. Knead until smooth, and satiny. Add 1 T oil to large pan, put dough in and lightly grease the sides of the dough ball. Let rise until double in bulk. Put small amount of flour on rolling board or table, put dough on board, and spread out with hands about 1/2 thickness into rectangle shape. Spread with margarine, sprinkle with white sugar, (may use brown sugar), and cinnamon. Roll up like a jelly roll. Slice about 3/4 " thick, put in greased pan and let rise until double. Personal Notes:
Grandma would use this recipe for her "Parkerhouse" rolls, I never was brave enough to try. She also made it into a big oval ball, baked in a round pan, iced it with brown sugar icing, and Dad would put peanut butter on these slices. YUM!
