6 eggs, beaten separately
2 C. sugar
4 C. flour
½ lb. butter
6 T. buttermilk
1 lb. raisins
2 t. soda in buttermilk
2 C. jam
2 t. cinnamon
2 t. nutmeg
2 t. cloves
1 t. allspice
2 C. nuts

Filling for Jam Cake
½ lb. butter
1 C. sweet milk
3 C. sugar
1 t. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and beat well. Add milk, soda, and spices; beat well. Add jam, walnuts and raisins. Mix well. Add flour and beaten egg whites. Makes 4 layers.

Filling – Brown ¼ C. sugar. Mix with sugar and milk that has been boiling. Cook until it forms soft ball in water. Remove from heat and add butter and flavoring. Beat until cool enough to spread.

Yummy! I think this was my favorite "Aunt Bertha cake." I doubt that I will ever attempt it, though, because it looks hard! (Jane)
