We were all talking about how pretty Papa kept everything; how he kept the hedges trimmed, the shrubs pruned, and the yard mowed, and the buildings were always all painted and there was a rock wall. There was an orchard and a strawberry patch and the garden was on the left and the land was always bordered with Sericea and it was so pretty. It was such a gorgeous place that as you drove up the road, it was just such a pleasant, beautiful sight that you just couldn't wait to get there.

There was always a swing on the front porch and someone always greeted you on the front porch.

We all remember sleeping with Papa on the featherbed whenever we visited. He always told us stories about when he was a little boy and then after he told us those stories, he told us stories about ourselves that included any friends that he had heard us talk about.

I remember that Papa wouldn't go inside without his feet being washed, and if there was a grandchild there, he always wanted them to wash his feet until they squeaked. And Papa always was ready to listen to you; if you could play the piano, he would sit down and listen to you.

One thing that always intrigued me was that Mama always got everything done, and every afternoon she would have time to sit in the swing and if you were there, you could sit in the swing with her and talk.

The schools used to close for 2 weeks during the fall for cotton picking. During one of those weeks we would go stay with Mama Cleghorn and pick cotton to earn our spending money. Don't you know she loved having those grandchildren spend the week with her!!
