Nona used to spend a week with us sometimes during the summer and sometimes I would go stay with her. I was always so thrilled to be with her because she treated me like I was her age (a teenager)! She was probably the world's biggest Ricky Nelson fan and we would play his records and dance for hours. One time when she was at our house, we had a revival going on that week. Nona had visited us enough that she knew a lot of the people in the church and one night she and four other people sang as a quartet. With Nona's ability to change her voice, she sang the bass part, which really caused some eyes to pop, hearing that deep voice come from a teenage girl's mouth!

When Drennon was a teenager, of course he had to try smoking. One night his best friend was spending the night with him and after everyone else was asleep they lit their cigarettes and blew the smoke into the furnace (thinking that would get rid of the smoke). Of course, instead of going outside, the smoke came into every room of the house; Daddy woke up thinking the house was on fire!

We didn't usually go to Aunt Bertha's for Christmas, but one year we did and we spent the night on Christmas Eve. I was so worried that Santa Claus wasn't going to find me because we weren't at the right place, but Aunt Bertha kept assuring me that he would. She said that since I didn't have a stocking there, I needed to put my shoes beside my bed like Dutch children do, and the next morning Santa had filled up my shoes! That was so exciting for me, because we didn't hang stockings at our house!

I think that was the same year that we were at Aunt Bertha's when the "serenaders" came. But these weren't the happy, carol-singing type of serenaders. They were all in costume and I remember one man that, to my child's eyes, was absolutely huge and he had a bone in his nose!! That frightened me so much I wouldn't come out from behind a chair until long after they left.
