Ingredients: 1 lb Ground Beef 1 small Onion - chopped 1 Green Pepper - chopped 1 (28 oz) can Whole Tomatoes, with liquid 1 (28 oz) can Tomato Sauce 1 tsp Salt 1 tsp Black Pepper 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tsp Oregano 1 tsp Sugar 1 cup Water

Directions:Brown beef along with the onion, green pepper, salt and black pepper in a large saucepan or skillet. Cook until meat is broken up and vegetables are tender. Pour off excess grease, and then add in the whole tomatoes (with liquid), garlic powder, oregano, sugar and water. Cook, breaking up the tomatoes with a spoon. Add in the can of tomato sauce and simmer for 1 hour. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. You may need to add a little more water to keep the sauce loose. |

Notes: This is the way Mom always made her sauce when I was growing up. Wendy sent me a copy of this recipe and it was in Mom's handwriting. Mom noted that this was the recipe they made at the Marlowe Grill in Ironton, Ohio where she worked as a waitress before she married Dad. Mom said to add in a can of whole tomatoes. What she was talking about was a quart jar of tomatoes we canned from tomatoes raised on our farm. These tomatoes were so much better than anything you can buy today. They were responsible for the unique flavor of the sauce. Oh well, I guess we will just have to live with what we can get. To add some spice, I add in ¼ to ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
