Ingredients:  
1/2 C Egg whites, room temperature, about 3 eggs
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 lb. confectioner's sugar

Be sure mixing bowl and beaters are very clean.
Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until it peaks.
Gradually add confectioner's sugar until well mixed then beat at high speed until stiff.
Keep icing covered with plastic wrap and a wet cloth while working with it.

Royal Icing using meringue powder
1/2 C warm water
1/4 C meringue powder
4 C confectioner's sugar ( 1 lb. 3 oz.)
Mix water and meringue powder on high speed with wire beater until it forms peaks. Change to stiff beater and gradually add in the confectioner's sugar. Beat at high speed for about 5 minutes or until of desired consistency.
Keep icing covered with plastic wrap and a wet cloth while working with it.
