3 sticks softened butter
8 eggs
anise and vanilla to taste (1-2 tsp each)
1 3/4 cup sugar
6 heaping tsp baking powder
dash of salt (about 1/8-1/4 tsp)
6-7 cups flour
1 cup or so chopped toasted almonds (chop and bake at 350 for 10-15 min)
chocolate chips if you don't like nuts

Cream butter and eggs. Add flavorings and sugar.

Sift baking powder and salt with 2-3 cups flour and add gradually to creamed mixture. Continue to add flour until dough starts running up the beaters. Then add more flour by hand (off mixer)until dough is firm. Add almonds or chocolate chips.

Spread into oblong strips 2-3" wide on a greased cookie sheet. Usually 2 or 3 strips on a cookie sheet.

Bake 20-25 min at 350º. Five min before done, brush with beaten egg white to give a luster on top.

After cooled diagonally slice and place back on cookie sheet.
Bake again for 10-12 min at 375º turning once.
