1/21 cup shortening
1 cup boiling water
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 tsp lemon extract
3 packages yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
8 1/2 cups flour
oil for deep frying

Icing:

1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup light brown sugar
3 tbsp heavy cream
3/4 tsp maple flavoring
powdered sugar

Directions:
Combine shortening and boiling water. Dissolve yeast in warm water. When shortening mixture is luke warm, stir in yeast. Add remaining ingredients, adding just enough flour to knead well, knead on lightly floured board five minutes. Let dough rest, covered ten minutes. Roll out to one-quarter inch thickness. Cut into 1x6 inch strips. Cover and lest rises one hour. Heat oil to 375 degrees. Slip raised side into oil first turn while cooking until light brown. Drain
