2 c sugar
1-3/4 c cake flour
1/2 t salt
1/2 c buttermilk or sour milk
1 t baking soda
1 c water , boiling
1/2 c Crisco
4 bars unsweetened chocolate
2 eggs
2 c marshmallows [cut into 1/3's]

Directions:
Directions:
Put Crisco and chocolate in a mixing bowl. Pour boiling water over them and stir until entirely dissolved. Add sugar and sour milk. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Sift dry ingredients together 3 times then add to bowl. Stir just enough to wet flour. Add unbeaten eggs. Beat lightly until smooth [about 2 minutes]. Bake in a 9 x 13 pan @ 350 until done [time is not on recipe]. Place sliced marshmallows on cake side by side tightly when it comes out of oven
Cover cake/pan with a cookie sheet to help melt marshmallows. When cool, frost with chocolate frosting over marshmallows and cake

Tips: To cut marshmallows, use buttered scissors
modern tip- use miniature marshmallows
