2 tablespoons of alum

14 cups white sugar

Directions:
Directions:
2 gallons of cucumbers, washed and cut into pickle sized pieces. Put in a nonreactive container and sprinkle with 1/2 cup pickling salt and cover with hot tap water. Stir twice each day for 3 days On day 4 or when the cucumbers have become clear, cover with hot tap water. If not clear on day 4 put hot tap water for another day or so until the cucumbers are clear. On day 5 or so drain and rinse well and cover with hot tap water and 2 tablespoons alum. On the next day (Day 6) drain and rinse very well. To make syrup boil all ingredients including spice bag until sugar is dissolved,
Pour over pickles. On day 7 drain syrup and reheat with the spice bag and pour the syrup including the spice bag over pickles. On day 8 drain syrup and reheat. Pour back over pickles and seal in jars (Doesn't matter if sealed, as they will keep)

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
If it takes longer than 4 days for cucumbers to become clear this will push all other steps back. These are very similar to the Nine Day Pickles Mom used to make.
