Cake:
1/2 c shortening
2 eggs
1 T vanilla
1 t salt
2 1/4 c flour
1 t vinegar
1 1/2 c sugar
2 oz red coloring
2 T cocoa
1 c buttermilk
1 t soda

Frosting:
4 T flour
1 c sugar
1 c butter or margarine or Crisco
1 c milk
1 t vanilla

Cake:
Cream shortening and sugar well, add eggs and beat. Make paste with cocoa and coloring and add to mixture. Add vanilla and buttermilk alternating with flour and salt. Add soda in last 1/4 c flour. Add vinegar and mix just to blend. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. You may use less coloring and use water to make up the 2 oz. No coloring makes a light chocolate cake and 1/2 oz makes a red cake It tastes the same.

Frosting:
Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add cooled flour and milk mixture. Beat well.
