1/2 tsp baking soda
1 c. water
8 oz. chopped dates
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. chopped nuts
1 egg, beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve the baking soda in 1 cup of boiling water, then pour over the chopped dates. Let this stand for 15 minutes.
Mix together the flour, sugar and salt. Add this to the water and dates and mix.
Stir in the vanilla, egg and chopped nuts.

Pour in a greased loaf pan and bake in a 325º oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
Test with a toothpick, when it comes out clean from the middle, it's done.
Let cool on a rack before turning out from the pan.
