1 c. dates, chopped
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 t. soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 1/4 c. flour plus 3 T.
1/2 t. salt
3/4 t. soda
1 package (6 oz.) chocolate chips
1/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. nuts, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Combine dates, boiling water and 1 t. soda; set aside. Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Add flour, salt, 3/4 t. soda and date mixture to the creamed mixture. Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Combine chocolate chips, 1/4 c. sugar and nuts; sprinkle on top of batter. Bake at 350* for 35 - 40 minutes
