4 cups all purpose flour (sift the flour and then measure 4 cups)
2 & 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (reduce ingredient by 50% at 6000 ft altitude)
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup of soft shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs unbeaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 to 8 teaspoon milk

Combine dry ingredients and set aside.

Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy.

Add flour mixture to wet mixture a cup at a time and alternate with 1 tablespoon milk. Final dough should be firm but not dry; you may need a little more or less milk.

Refrigerate dough for 1 to 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 375.

Roll and cut cookie dough (you will need flour on the rolling surface and rolling pin. Dough thickness is to preference, 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

Bake about 9 minutes until lightly brown around edges.

I frosted cookies using a mixture of powdered sugar, milk and a drop of vanilla -mixture should be thick enough that it does not drip off the cookie; thicken with more powdered sugar if too runny.
