3/4 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 t. salt
1/4 t. cloves
1/4 t. allspice
1/4 t. nutmeg
2 t. cinnamon
2 T. cocoa
1 c. jam (any kind)
2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. raisins
1 c. nuts, chopped
2 c. applesauce
2 t. baking powder
2 eggs, beaten

Caramel Icing:
1 c. brown sugar
5 T. butter
1/4 c. milk
1 c. conf. sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add spices and cocoa, then jam. Mix raisins, nuts, flour and baking powder together and add. Mix in applesauce and eggs. Mix well. Pour into greased tube pan or layer pans. Bake at 350* for about 30 minutes for layers (longer for tube pan)

Caramel Icing:
Melt butter, stir in brown sugar. Bring to a boil stirring constantly. Add milk slowly. Boil 3 minutes. Cool to lukewarm. Add conf. sugar and beat until smooth. Spread on cake while warm.
