1 2/3 c. flour
1/2 t. salt
2 t. baking powder
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2/3 c. milk
3 egg whites
1/2 t. vanilla
1/2 t. lemon extract
1/2 c. walnuts, chopped

Checkerboard Frosting:
1 T. warm milk
2 T. butter, melted
2 1/4 c. conf. sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 t. vanilla
1 square chocolate, melted
1 T. milk

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. Add shortening and milk. Beat. Add egg whites, vanilla and lemon extract. Pour into greased 9" pan. Bake at 350* for 40 - 50 minutes. Cool. Cut into squares.

Checkerboard Frosting:
Combine 1 T. warm milk, butter, conf. sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Beat until smooth and creamy. Add melted chocolate and 1 T. milk to 1/3 of frosting. Arrange squares checkerboard fashion. Decorate with chopped nuts.
