Ingredients:
Ingredients:
3 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
4 eggs:
1 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla

Topping:
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. water
1/2 c. butter
1 T, vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift first 4 ingredients. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, to the creamed mixture, beat well. Add buttermilk and vanilla. Combine this mixture with dry ingredients. Pour the batter into a 10 in. tube pan; bake for 60-65 minutes. While the cake is baking, make the topping. Dissolve the sugar in the water; add the butter and vanilla. Heat until the mixture is a creamy syrup. When the cake is done, leave it in the pan and prick holes in it with a fork. Loosen the edges. Pour the topping over the cake. Allow the mixture to sink in and around the cake. Turn out and sprinkle with confectioner's sugar. Rum or brandy extract may be added to the topping if desired. NOTES: 1)For 1 c.buttermilk: I put a T. of lemon juice or white vinegar in a measuring cup and fill the rest of the cup with milk. 2) I like to use PAM baking spray, otherwise, with regular spray I have to wait for over an hour to take it out of the pan. 3) I use 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 tsp. rum extract (or other extracts like lemon or almond).
