1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs beaten
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 cup Steen's syrup
1 cup boiling water
1 1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and grease a 8x9 baking pan.

Cream together shortening and sugar, add eggs and sifted dry ingredients. Alternate with syrup and water. Beat until mixture is creamy.

Add the chopped nuts, if desired, blend well. Pour into a well greased pan and bake at 350º for 40 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
