No Maxon Family Cookbook complete without this recipe handed down from Mom's sister, Aunt Emma.

2 C flour
1/2 t. salt
1 t baking soda
2 t baking powder
1 C shortening
1 C white sugar
1 C brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 t vanilla
2 C rolled oats
1 C chopped walnuts or pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder into a bowl. Cream together shortening [I use half butter and half lard], sugars, egg and vanilla.
Re-sift dry ingredients into creamed mixture; blend well. Add rolled oats, and nuts if desired. Continue stirring until well mixed.
Drop by heaping teaspoon onto cookie sheet. Bake in a 400F oven for about 10-12 minutes.

I do remember Aunt Emma baking these when we were visiting at Grandpa Ament's farm near Geddes, S.D. when I was very young. All through my grade school years these were another "after-school" treat Mom used to make regularly.
