Ingredients: 5 c flour (2 1/2) 3/4 c shortening (1/4 + 1/8) 1 tsp baking soda (1/2) 1 tsp salt (1/2) 2 c buttermilk (1) 3 tsp baking powder (1 1/2) 1 tbsp yeast 1/2 c lukewarm water (1/4) 3 tbsp sugar (11/2)

Directions:Dissolve yeast in water. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until well mixed. Add buttermilk and yeast. Work into flour. Grease a large bowl. Put dough into bowl, making sure all sides are covered with oil, cover and place into refrigerator until ready to use. Take dough out as needed and roll 1/2 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut with biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise. Brush tops with butter. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. |

Notes: This was one of Mom's biscuit recipes. She does not state in her recipe but this dough, if kept in the refrigerator, would keep for probably one week. These are a tasty alternative to regular biscuits--the yeast gives a them a little different taste and texture. The amounts listed in the () are for halving the recipe. Notice the amount of yeast stays the same.
