Directions:Cook dried apples in water and sugar to taste until apples are reconstituted and thickened. Allow to cool.
Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in just enough milk to moisten and form a dough. Divide dough into two or three sections. Cover dough that is not being used to keep it from drying out. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a small saucer or bowl as a guide, cut out circles of dough. Place some cooked apples into the center of the circle. Fold dough over and pinch edges together, then seal with the tines of a fork. Don't make up too many at a time.
In a skillet, heat some oil and fry to brown both sides. Do not add too much oil or they will be too greasy. Drain on a paper towel.
They can also be put in an oven and baked. ** |

Notes: This is another of Grandma Deaton's recipes that Mom wrote down. When making these, start with the lesser of the amounts, especially the shortening. One half cup per 2 cups of flour seems to be a good ratio. Make sure the edges are sealed or otherwise, the filling will leak out. And fry in just a small bit of oil. Mom did not give instruction for baking but they would need to bake in a 350 to 375 degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes on a parchment line or greased baking sheet. Also, if you do not have dried apples, cook fresh apples into a thick and chunky applesauce--do not use the bland store bought applesauce! Once cooked, these still have somewhat of a "doughy" taste but it's part of their appeal.
