2 cup flour
1/2 t. soda
1/2 t. salt
1 t. cinnamon
1 T. cloves
1/2 cup butter (1 stick) softened
1 cup. bown sugar
1 egg
1 t. vanilla

FILLING
3 oz. chopped dates
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
1. In small saucepan, combine filling ingredients and cook over low heat, stirring often, until it forms a paste. Set aside to cool.
2. Cream butter and brown sugar.
3. Add egg and vanilla.
4. Sift together flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves; add to butter/sugar mixture and beat until well blended.
5. Roll out half of dough on floured surface to 8" x 10" size. Spread with half the cooled filling mixture; roll up and freeze. Repeat with the other half of dough and filling. 6. Slice frozen dough about 1/2 inch thick.
7. Bake at 325º for about 7-8 minutes. Watch them carefully; do not over bake. As soon as they begin to brown on the bottom, take them out or they will burn on the bottom.
