1/4 c flour
1 c milk

1/2 c shortening (gasp)
1 stick margarine (more gasping)
1 c sugar

Add 1 t vanilla

Heat Milk and flour together until thick. Let cool
In mixing bowl beat shortening, margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add flour mixture whip
Add 1 t vanilla

This is the recipe Grandma Betty used to put between the layers of a 4 layer chocolate cake or red velvet cake.
I would try this with 1 c butter if I were doing it today. If that didn't work I would go to using 1 c whip cream and 1/4 c cream cheese to stabilize.
