2 c. all purpose flour
1/2 c. very finely chopped walnuts
1/4 c. granulated sugar
2 t. baking powder
2 t. baking soda
1/4 t. salt
6 T. unsalted butter, chilled
2/3 c. buttermilk
2 t. maple extract

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400º. Lightly butter a baking sheet.
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, walnuts, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut the butter into 1/2-inch cubes and distribute them over the flour mixture. With a pastry blender or two knives in scissor fashion, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, stir together the buttermilk and maple extract. Add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine.
With lightly floured hands, divide the dough into two equal-sized pieces and pat each portion into a 5-inch circle on a lightly floured cutting board. Cut each circle into 6 wedges. Transfer the 12 pieces to the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 17-19 minutes or until the tops are lightly browned.

Homemade buttermilk: 1. Place a Tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup.2. Add enough milk to bring the liquid up to the one-cup line.
3. Let stand for five minutes.
