1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional)
1-6oz. package chocolate chips

Heat oven to 375º. Grease a 13x9x2 pan. Mix butter, sugars, and vanilla thoroughly. Beat in egg. In separate bowl mix flour, baking soda, and salt together. Add to the butter/sugar/egg/vanilla mixture. Mix in walnuts, if using. Spread into greased pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over they top of the dough. Remove from oven after 1-2 minutes and run a knife through dough to marbleize. Return to oven. Bake 12-14 mins. Baking less time will yield a softer square. Cut into 2" squares. Cool on rack.

This is the easiest recipe and we rarely added the nuts. We would make these at the last minute if we were getting company.
