1 1/2 cups lightly salted butter
4 cups all purpose flour
4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground ginger
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup dark molasses
2 large eggs

Directions:

Melt butter in large sauce pan, remove from heat and let cool
Sift flour with baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and ginger.
To melted, cooled butter add 2 cups sugar, molasses and eggs & beat well.
When smooth and thick, stir in flour mixture one cup at a time.
When dough is well mixed, cover and chill for 2 hours or longer.
Heat oven to 375º F.
Roll dough into small balls using 1 1/2 tsp dough for each.
roll balls in remaining 1/2 cup sugar.
Place on greased baking sheet 2 inches apart.
Bake for about 15 minutes until cookies are dark golden.
Remove from oven and let cool 2 minutes before removing to wire rack.
