I have nothing but fond memories of the early 1970’s with my feet under Sister Beaty and Family’s table. I ingrained myself within this family during my early “trials and tribulations”, and not one time did I feel the family wished I was elsewhere. In fact, the girls started calling me their big sister. Sister Beaty exemplifies what a true woman of God is and should be. She always had encouraging words, always instructed you in the ways of God. She had one saying I will never forget, “Never let them see you sweat”. Finally, I grew old enough to understand what that really meant.

Sister Beaty, I believe, got her spirit of kindness and giving from Big Mama (her mother). I didn’t know Big Mama very well, but those days when I just needed to get away from everything and have complete solitude, I spent with Big Mama. The rest of the family would be at work or in school. Then it would be just me and Big Mama. She watching soaps, while I sat content in my own space; knowing if I needed to talk someone was there to listen.

Now, back to my feet under the table ... when I say Sister Beaty can really “throw-down”, I’m not exaggerating. Smothered pork chops and gravy, candied yams (oh my goodness), and those Malt-O-Meal muffins! I had never tasted Malt-O-Meal. But those muffins . . . Honey, please! And don’t forget the homemade dinner rolls. Talk about soul-food heaven … it was at the Beaty house!

Whatever problems were occurring in my life, Sister and Brother Beaty were always willing to listen and give advice. It might not always have been what I wanted to hear, but they taught and admonished Biblically. Whatever I told Sister Beaty, she kept to herself, same with Brother Beaty. I have always been able to talk to both of them without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Sister Beaty is so down to earth and “real”. She makes no differences between you and the next person. We are all equal. Did you know she can still, at this stage of her life, touch the floor with the palm of her hands while standing? Unsure if Brother Beaty can do that! (ha-ha) In an attempt to stay on Brother Beatys’ good side (he-he), I must say something good about him (he might get jealous if I don’t) Did you know Brother Beaty used to be a part of the SUGAR LAND Church of Christ Drama group? He was pretty good in his younger years, not saying he would not be good now (smirk). Brother Beaty took time away from his ministerial duties, learned his lines and had a great time entertaining everyone.

Sister Beaty I just wanted to say, not only were you a beacon of light during my early adult years but your aura continues to permeate brightly to influence me and others around you. With that being said,

BEATY FAMILY, I LOVE YA’LL!
Jewel

Let them shout for joy and be glad, Who favor my righteous cause; And let them say continually, “Let the Lord be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” ~ Psalm 35:27
