"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Eating dinner together as a family lowers your child's risk of obesity, drug use and stress-related illness, while fostering communication and improving school grades, according to WebMD. Involve your child in the family dinner process by teaching to set the table.

Children who are allowed to help with dinner, even by simply setting a plate on the table, are more likely to want to sit down and even discuss personal issues with you during the meal.

Keep it simple with a basic table setting design to start teaching your child. You can add auxiliary pieces at a later time.

DRAWING THE PLACE SETTING

1 Draw or print a template for a basic table setting design. Martha Stewart Crafts website offers a colorful template you can print from your personal computer. A basic place setting should include the dinner plate, knife, spoon, fork, glass and napkin.

2 Use a sheet of paper the size of a standard placement and draw a large circle in the center to represent the dinner plate.

3 Draw a fork to the left of the dinner plate.

4 Draw a knife to the immediate right of the dinner plate. Draw a spoon next to the knife.

5 Draw a smaller circle to represent the drinking glass directly above the knife and spoon. This circle should be about one-tenth the size of the dinner plate circle.

6 Draw a rectangle in the center of the dinner plate to represent the dinner napkin. The rectangle should be one-third the size of the dinner plate.

TEACHING THE PLACE SETTING

7 Lay out all the necessary items for the place setting. You should lay out a dinner plate, glass, napkin, fork, spoon and knife.

8 Demonstrate how to carefully place each item on the place setting drawing. Start by placing the dinner plate in the center.

9 Place the fork to the left of the plate, on top of the fork drawing. Repeat this step for the knife and spoon on the right side of the plate.

10 Place the drinking glass above the knife and spoon on top of the glass drawing.

11 Allow your child to repeat the above steps as many times as necessary until she can set the table without the assistance of the place setting drawing.
