2 lbs beef chuck cut in1 1/2 inch cubes
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic
1 medium onion, sliced
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 T salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp pepper
1 T ketchup
dash of cloves or allspice
6 carrots, pared and quartered
4 potatoes pared and quartered
1 lb of small white onion (optional)
Mushrooms sliced or whole (optional)
Turnips or parsnips (optional)
couple drops of hot sauce
It's a stew - use all or none optional vegetables

In a dutch oven brown meat in 2 T of hot shortening, turning often. Add 2 cups of hot water and next 10 ingredients.Cover and cook for 1 1/2 hours stirring occasionally to keep from sticking. Remove bay leaves. Add vegetables, cover and cook 30 to 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

Gravy: Measure 1 3/4 cups of hot liquid from stew. Set aside. Combine 1/4 cup water and 2 T flour and stir until smooth. Stir flour, water mixture slowly into hot liquid. Pour back into stew and cook and stir until bubbly.
