"The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found."--Calvin Trillin

Grandma Loran would bake bread every few days. She kept it wrapped in tea towels in a big drawer in her kitchen. Mary Loran Kuehler remembered going to garden or cellar to get an onion, slicing onion and putting it on buttered bread and making onion sandwiches. Berta remembers making these and taking out into the woods and pastures to share with Sonny, Kathy, Marion, Suzan, Mary Alice, Debbie and any other of the grandchildren who happened to be there. We also probably grabbed a couple of handfuls of ginger snap cookies which Grandma Loran kept in a big brown cookie jar in the cabinet by the west door of her kitchen. We loved those cookies and if they were there a few days, they would get softer and we could just gobble them down!!!
