1 3-6 lb. frying chicken
2 qt. water
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. shortening
3/4 cup buttermilk (or add 1 Tbsp. vinegar to 1 cup milk and let sit 5 min, then measure 3/4 cup)

Place chicken in Dutch oven pot. Add the water and 2 tsp. salt.
DO not cover. Bring to a boil.
Cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 1 hour or until fall off the bone tender .
Remove chicken from pot and cool. Bone the chicken, cut meat to bite size
Bring broth to boil and add pepper.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Cut in shortening.
Add buttermilk, stirring with fork until moistened.
Knead bread dough 4-5 times, pat into 1/2 inch pieces.
Drop into boiling broth for 8-10 min. Stir occasionally.
Stir in chicken and serve.
