3 to 4 medium potatoes
1 egg
2½ cups flour
1 Tbsp salt
2 medium onions, chopped

Directions:
Grate potatoes and drain. Add salt, egg and flour. Mix well with a wooden spoon. Heat a large pot of water to boiling. Place a small portion of dough mixture on a plate and flatten slightly. Hold plate over the boiling water; cut off small pieces of dough and push them in, dipping the knife frequently into the water for easier cutting. When halushky rise to the surface, they are done. Drain.Place on serving dish. Keep warm. Repeat until all dough has been used. Add melted butter to cooked halushky so they do not stick together. Serve with fried chopped onions and butter, or creamed cottage cheese. Fry leftovers in butter.
Halushky is Ukrainian for dumplings made from a batter or thick dough mixture. They are served with a stew, or roast or gravy, or as a side dish. Good halushky should be light.
