2 cups brown sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup molasses
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. lemon extract
4 cups flour
1tsp.cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. soda

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream sugar, shortening. egg, molasses, vanilla, lemon extract. add remaining ingredients mix well. form into balls, place on a lightly greased cookie sheet or on parchment paper. Bake at 350º for 12 minutes, tops should be slightly crinkled remove from oven sprinkle with sugar. let stand 2-3 before removing to cooling rack.

This has been a favorite cookie recipe for our family for a long time. Grandpa Metzcar introduced all of us to this recipe. It is a great winter cookie recipe, it is one of my traditional Christmas cookies. If you use a scoop to make these cookies use the small scoop unless you want a big cookie..
