1 c. sugar
3 TBSP shortening
3 eggs
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
Mix sugar & shortening on medium speed of mixer for 2 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla and mix for 1 more minute. Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Take this dry mixture and add alternating with milk. Beat 2 more minutes. Grease and flour 2 round 8" or 9" cake pans. Pour batter into pans. Bake 25 or 30 minutes.

Whip 1 cup of cream, add 3 TBPS of powdered sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla.

Serve with strawberries and fresh whipped cream.

One summer we had lots of strawberry shortcake as I remember mom making it several times before a cooking contest which she was entering her mothers' shortcake. The problem was that there really wasn't much of a receipe so mom had to try several different times while she perfected and wrote down the recipe.

Her hard work paid off, or was it all of her taste-testers, she one 1st place in the competition!!
