Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 T olive oil
3 slices pancetta - chopped
2 sprigs rosemary - left intact
1 sprig thyme - left intact
1 large bay leaf
1 medium onion
1 small carrot - finely chopped
1 stalk celery - finely chopped
4 tsp minced garlic
salt & pepper
2 - 15 oz cans cannellini beans
1 cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
2 cups water
1 quart chicken broth
1 1/2 cups ditalini pasta
grated parmesan to taste

Directions:
Directions:
Heat a deep pot over medium high heat and add oil and pancetta. Brown the pancetta bits lightly, and add herb stems, bay leaf, chopped vegetables, and garlic. Season vegetables with salt & pepper. Add beans, tomato sauce, water, and broth and raise heat to high. Bring soup to a rapid boil and add pasta. Reduce heat to medium and cook soup, stirring occasionally, 6 - 8 minutes or until pasta is cooked al dente. Rosemary and thyme leaves will separate from stems as soup cooks. Remove herb stems and bay leaf. Top soup with lots of grated parmesan.

Personal Notes:
This meal is nice served with crusty bread for dipping or bowl mopping!
A funny story - As I was growing up I'd hear my Dad say when he was frustrated, "Mama Mia, Pasta Fazool!" I didn't realize it was even a food, much less Pasta e Fagioli and that it was one of Nanny's favorite recipes. I don't have hers, so I hope Rachael's comes close to a family tradition from the Delulio side.
