8-oz self raising flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbs cocoa
3 oz sugar
1 tbs syrup
12-14 tbs hot water
1 tsp bicarbonate soda
3 oz oleo or lard
vanilla essence

Directions:
Directions:
Mix the flour, salt, cocoa and sugar together. Dissolve the syrup in the water and add the bicarbonate of soda. Melt the fat and mix all the ingredients together, including the essence, but do not beat the mixture, which should be very soft. Divide the mixture evenly into two 8 inch sandwich tins and bake in a moderately hot oven for 20 minutes. When cool use jam or a sweet spread as a filling between the two layers.
